The head came off today. It appears a ring in No.3 has broken, a small piece has gone up into the combustion chamber & absolutely hammered the crown of the piston & the head. Possibly also bent a valve or two. I am currently seeking prices for a rebuild kit & machining. Here's what I'd ...

Might not be as catastrophic as you think.
Might be something as simple as a burnt exhaust valve.

Either way, ripping the head off will reveal all.

I'm about an hour North of Newy.
I've got a black MB that I bought from some girl in Thornton about 4 months ago.
Only got it to save money traveling to & from work. My Rangie was costing toooo much.

Looks like this car has done the rounds.

I know the guy that owned it in the Newcastle area.
He bought it from some guy in Milperra about 4 years ago.

Hi Tez, Welcome. Similar story to me, except I have a Range Rover, and my boat is a bit smaller. I've had the MB for 3 months now. And like you, I'm not interested in increasing it's performance. (although I think mine is down on power from standard - it hates hills) 543cc. mmmmmmm. fuel economy. I'...

I've just been through a headache situation with spark plugs for the MB. I've now owned it 3 months, and thought I'd change the plugs because of the unknown factor. Anyway, it had the small (5/8) plugs. They were NGK BKR5E. The problem is the nut part of the plug is down near the mating surface of t...

I've got the 539s on my falcon.
Worst tyre I've ever had.

Performance is rubbish.
Squeals easily - when not even pushed.
Don't get the 'feel' that I expect.
Does not give me confidence in the wet.

Might be different on a light vehicle, however I'll never buy them again.

Hate to disappoint you but 255km and 21L equates to 8.23 L/100K which in old school is about 34mpg.

That's VERY ordinary.

In my experience the "winter" hose setup isn't necessary, in Canberra the temp gets down into minus territory during winter but I've never had a problem with "carby icing". Mind you I do let the engine warm up for 5+ minutes before driving. Carby Icing has nothing to do with let...

Yep, having similar issues. My MB has a fair bit of blow by. Fitted a plastic oil bottle and a bit of garden hose for a catch tank system. Didn't work all that well, so just fitted one of those cheap filters off fleabay. Also suffering carby icing. Only seemed to do it on the way to work. Lose all p...

Can't explain the jelly, but I've been having more carby problems with my MB. Seemed to run for 15-20 mins and then lose all power. Pull over and let it idle for a couple of mins, then give it a rev, and all is OK for another 30mins. Turned out to be carby icing . The tube from the exhaust to air cl...

Premium Unleaded

Anyone tried PULP in their MB? Does it make any difference in performance / fuel economy? From what I remember, it's heavier (more dense) and creates a bigger bang. That should boost performance. Is this "extra" performance worth the "extra" expense? I also heard it takes 2 tanks...
