Does anyone have any tips on setting up the gear shift selector arms correctly?

During my total rebuild, I replaced all the usual worn linkage bits. But never got a situation that allowed for the selection of reverse 100% of the time. The other gears are a bit stiff on occasion but always engage correctly. In reverse however sometimes the gears are not meshed right and you need to reselect to get it engaged.

How well can you get these adjusted? Or are these a bit hit and miss by design and I am wasting my time??

Any tips appreciated……

Thanks
Bruce

As far as I know the only adjustment is the base plate on the shifter. If that doesn't solve the problem then it could be an issue with how the gearbox is mounted, or that there is a fault within the gearbox itself.

My current gearbox has an issue where reverse can only be found by putting the shifter somewhere around where you would expect fifth gear, and slamming it downwards with considerable force. I suspect this is a problem with the selector fork or perhaps a missing detent, because once out of reverse it takes some fiddling to allow first gear to be slotted.

Thanks Brayden,

Just reading section 12 of the SS40T Service Manual and it does have a section on that adjustment. I did not follow this procedure when I reassembled the car. So that could be the issue…

You got it...

Adjust the shifter plate, under the floorpan. It describes it in the manual. Something like forward, if you cant get 1st and 2nd, or backwards if you have trouble getting 3rd and 4th.

Had an issue with mine, and this cleared it up. :thumbup1:

Thanks....

Spent some time looking at it today. And now have a couple of other questions:

1 – The book isn’t real clear on the adjustment procedure. I loosen the 4 bolts from the underside of the MightyBoy with no problem but little movement is achievable. I assume that is to do with the fact that I have not loosened the so called “locking” bolts. The question is how do you get at them? Obviously not from the bottom side…. So do just lift the boot inside to gain simple access to them?? Just not clear and thought it easier to ask then waste more time...

2- When the MightyBoy is cold, the gear shift is damn near perfect! Only a bit stiff and harder to engage reverse on occasion when hotter. Being an Electric Vehicle, I run thinner then recommended synthetic gearbox oil by choice (On these conversions you look at reducing all the friction areas possible). Just wondering if that could be causing my gear shift issue? What do other Mightyboy owners find is best weight of gearbox oil for our conditions in OZ?

Thanks

Bruce

I find VMX80 to be the best oil. I'm sure Royal Purple would be better but I can't justify the cost.

There are bolts under the shifter boot that should allow you the movement you need. They affix the shifter stabilising rod to the floor.

Has anyone tried the stuff I am using now....

Nulon SS75W90 API GL-5 semi-synthetic hypoid gear oil?

Here is the info on it:

http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Gear_a ... saxle_Oil/

Seemed a good idea at the time plus an OZ product.

Brayden could you actually pick the differences in products used in the MightyBoy Transaxle??

I’m happy to change and try if you did....

Thanks Again

I can only say with certainty that Castrol VMX80 works better than whatever oil was already in the box of any MB that I have bought. Make of that what you will.
