i have a tacho out of a honda accord (4cyl) and like most tachos, it has a trimpot on the side you can adjust to set it to wherever u want.
i just hooked it up, made sure the engine was revving at about 750 according to the 4cyl tacho and then just turned the trimpot with a screwdriver til it was showing 1000
not perfect but shows u whats going on

Given that the factory temp gauge is randomly inaccurate I would suggest replacing the sensor and installing a decent aftermarket electrical temp gauge. It is the best way to be sure that what you're experiencing is overheating and not a fault with the factory gauge.
