The Plug that connected onto my old alternator had 2 points connecting to it (T) Sort of like a T .The new one that i got from Adam has a Circle Fit , with 3 points in the Form (I_I). Is it possible to hook up the new alternator to the existing 2 point wiring?... and if so which of the 3 pins should be used?

Have a look near the terminals & see if there are any markings. The big round fitting is the battery lead (it's the same) but i'm unsure as to the rest. Can probably figure it out if they're marked. As the alternator is off an '85 model, does anyone else have an early one that can have a look at please?

hence the different plug.All the F8 books I have show the alternator as being externally regulated. There is a large lead to the battery, and 3 leads to the regulator, but the plugs shown are square or rectangular not round.
I have a SF416 manual which shows a 3 prong round plug so I suspect your alternator is off this although maybe its off a similar model 310.. It is described as an internally regulated system.The 3 terminals are L = lamp, IG = ignition switch, D= dummy terminal, I think the dummy terminal is not used as the picture shows only 2 wires going to the plug.

your right mowog - i took it to the auto electrician and he said that the third pin and the L (lamp) pin needed to be connected together , but he tested out the alternator and found it was not working anyways , so i had to get original one rewound (and it wasnt bloody cheap)

How much did he charge for the reco job & was it successful? full rewind job (very uncommon) or regulator pack rebuild?
I'll drop you a line when i'm in Sydney in a few weeks time dude - sorry about the hassle with it - it was working when it was removed...
