Guys, I have recently done a long trip down to Lismore in my 85 Alto, I have now noticed a weird grinding sound when I take off at hill starts and turning right.

It only happens when the engine is under stress....it doesn't sound like a CV joint tinkle, but more a grinding sound.

Could the engine mounts vibrate loose on a long run ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Seeya...Greg.

I'll bet money that your front left wheel bearing needs replacing.

Could also be the rubber mounts wearing through. - Although you may also hear it when slowing down :|

start the motor up and grab hold of the mount bracket that goes to the firewall up the top and move it back and forward to see if you can reproduce the noise other wise use the hand brake and chocks and load the motor up in 1st gear (clutch half was out ) have someone listining to find the niose

Thanx Colin....I tried that thing with hand brake to try and replicate a hill start stress, but I can't make it do it unless the car is moving.

Weird shit.

Guys, the mystery has been resolved.........a recent exhaust mod was welded crooked and forced the pipe into part of the engine support thingy that runs underneath the motor.

Thanks to all who replied to this post, your input is always welcomed.

And Brett, who's the Speed Demon, you maniac, you need to put training wheels on your Boy.

I've also had a wierd noise develop recently. I think it's a front left wheel bearing. I get an awful grinding sort of noise which speeds up as the car gets faster. Does it at about 50km/h onwards and sounds terrible!?

Well, it's the wheel bearings.

I thought I would wait until Uni finished then get them done but I left it too late.

They collapsed on Sunday and have damaged the spline where the rotor slides on that it has snapped. Only avaiable part is in Japan (3 weeks) so getting complete hub assembly for $280 second-hand from Sydney (3 days). That is on top of the $235 for the bearings!

This car is costing me some $$$ I tell ya :!:

$235 for bearings? Sheesh they must be gold-plated for that price!

I know, but that's what they said - $235 then on top of that $280 for the hub assemble because of the snapped spline. I'm glad I checked on here because I wasn't sure how much they should cost but now I know it is too much I will find out why it is costing so much. I think I might be getting ripped off!

surely a used one would do you, there is nothing to wear out in the hub, as long as the thread/spline is not damaged.
i have a few of them.

I went and saw them today. I am getting the whole hub assembly second hand from Sydney, not sure where from, hopefully tomorrow - $280. I guess it's too late to get one off you now, mowog!
