Just as a point of interest, once you have the exploit on your computer, it downloads "something else". I'm not 100% sure what it is yet, as nortons doesn't pick it up (although AVG does, but can't delete it for more than a couple of seconds, and spybot can't clear it either)

The 2 names that spybot S&D come up with are "effectivebandtoolbar" and "Network essentials.search.exe".

Can't wipe the b@stards either

I'm running Norton and Firefox with no problems. In fact I didn't realise there was even a problem until others had pointed it out.

By the way, the virus that was present only caused issues with email address books, it would NOT require a format and reinstall of your OS.

Hey Guys Im a computer tech.

Yes nortons tends to have a lot of issues protecting itself from viruses. the reason for this is that it is the most popular antivirus on the market. so the virus/hackers tend to look for ways to exploit the number one security package.

I have installed hundreds and hundreds of antivirus packages over the last ten years and found they all have weaknesses to some degree.

My choice .... is AVG ... and its FREE ... that right FREE... want it?

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

download it and install it today, its not memory hungry like nortons that takes a huge footprint in the memory. it will update automatically and finds viruses that nortons cant see.

if you are using xp sp2 then you can turn on the firewall (built in to windows) this will be substantual for most situation.

if you are running 98 me or 200 then download zonealarm free

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/c ... lid=nav_za

also download adaware to remove nast spyware (different than viruses)

http://www.lavasoft.com/

that should keep most people pretty safe 95% of the time.

ohh and if you get really stuck.... http://www.fixuonline.com

just another note on the above post avg is ok but remember that the version u download is a *free* version... is anything ever free? (like spybot search and destroy had a trojan)
and for spyware nothing fixes windows better than the people that make it Microsoft Antispyware works great and even has protection to stop the spyware installing to start with
get it Here and yes it is in beta but works great
